The Sports Factor: Children and Sport |
|
Sports Factor 1999, radio program, 'Children and Sport", ABC Radio National, 30 July, 1999.
Amanda Smith: Today, on The Sports Factor - Children and Sport; the best of times and the worst of times, for children, parents and coaches.
CHILDREN SINGING: 'We are the champions, We are the champions, No time for losers, 'Cause we are the champions'
Amanda Smith: Well that's probably not the attitude to sport that most parents, coaches and educators would want children to develop. It's a tricky one though, because while there's a lot of emphasis these days put on teaching children to value participating in sport above winning, there's also lots of examples around that demonstrate to children that once you grow up, it's winning that counts above all else.
So how can we expect children to absorb one set of values about playing sport, when so much of what they see in the big time contradicts those values?

Anti-racism campaigns in football will be boosted across Victoria next season, as new complaints of racist abuse in junior matches in Melbourne emerged yesterday.
Following a series of reports in The Age, Football Victoria has confirmed plans to produce new anti-racism material, including pamphlets, to be distributed to almost 2000 junior, amateur and women's clubs next season.
The idea for the new anti-racism material came from the Essendon District Football League, which has been under fire over several incidents of racism and rough play over the past few years, including two matches last month in which boys as young as 13 were racially abused.
Essendon District league president Ian Price said that although official complaints of racism were rare, he supported calls to improve education about the problem.

Violence and racism have been allowed to get out of hand in the junior ranks of the Essendon District Football League, according to several players and parents who spoke to The Age.
One of them was Ryan Williams, who quit the game at 16 because of what he claims were regular outbreaks of violence and racist taunts involving players, officials and spectators.
"I started junior football when I was nine, but I got sick of turning up on Saturday and Sunday mornings, knowing I was entering a really big boxing ring," said Mr Williams, now 20 and studying to be a primary school teacher.

Under-12 coach suspended over racial abuse |
|
By Liz Minchin
August 1, 2005
The Age
A junior football coach has been suspended for life from a northern Melbourne league after an incident in which spectators screamed racist abuse at Sudanese boys.
Roxburgh Park Football Club was also fined over the incident, but plans to appeal against the fine and the ban on their under-12s coach this week.
Club president Ewan Wright agreed the coach could have been among a group of spectators yelling at opposition players, but said the lifetime ban was heavy-handed because "no racial comments were proven in relation to the suspension".
